Navigating the Course’s Trickier Sections
The middle portion of the round saw a mix of moments worthy of a nod and holes that bit back. Tee shots that should have been more careful caused a few double bogeys, particularly on the signature long par 3 sixth hole and the tricky ninth, where hazards close to the green didn’t show Turkaminator any mercy.
Yet there was a gleam of tactical nous, especially on the eleventh hole. A clever drive between fairway bunkers followed by an approach on a green known for its subtle breaks earned a satisfying two Stableford points—a small triumph in a round that demanded patience.
Up and Down: Position Swings Tell the Tale
After hole 4, a climb from sixth to third place injected some real hope and swagger into Turkaminator’s round. However, the mercurial nature of golf (and definitely not fairways lined with pine trees) saw a slip back to fifth after hole 6 and then a further drop to seventh after hole 14, reflective of the highs and lows encountered on the course.
Nevertheless, finishing the day securely in sixth position tied with a couple of contemporaries was no small feat in this field of 12. With a stableford total matching the event median and just a fraction shy of the average, Turkaminator showed pluck and tenacity in equal measure.
Recognising the Highs
Turkaminator’s best stretch of holes, from the second through the fourth, stitched together six Stableford points—a commendable highlight on a testing course where few easy holes exist.
And despite encountering advice from the Old Course’s numerous challenges, consistent pars and a clutch response to difficulties helped maintain a steady cadence across the round. Four holes yielded no Stableford points, but the resilience to bounce back was the story here.
Final Thoughts: More Than Just a Score
With a handicap of 28, Turkaminator (Yunus) embraced the full character of the Old Course’s mature pines and strategic tests, turning in a raw score of 114 and a stableford tally of 24. Not a chart-topper, but a testament to embracing the game’s quirks and challenges with spirit and good humour.
This scorecard, painted across the pine-lined fairways and undulating terrain of Vilamoura, invites a closer look at the evidence charting the highs, lows, and steady determination that made up the day. With plenty of golf left to play, Turkaminator has room to sharpen the game and perhaps tame some of those Old Course spirits next time around.
